Exploring What It Means to Know and Do Mathematics

I have never like Mathematics. During my schooling days, Mathematics is just completing worksheets and checking against answer keys. Obviously, Mathematics is definitely more than this. To teach is to learn twice! Now that I am a classroom teacher, it is my duty to think through what does it really mean to learn Mathematics and making sure my students do not have the same perception as I used to have.

Jean Piaget, a constructivist suggested to construct or build something in the physical world requires tools, materials and effort. We build understanding using our five senses.

Lev Vygotsky mentioned social learning settings affect how a learner learn and information a learner can internalize depends what is scaffolded.

As I was reading these theories, I reflected the teaching strategies which I used to adopt in the classroom. Did I provide sufficient opportunities for children to explore with their five senses? Are the materials provided relevant? Is social learning provided?

No one theory is especially suitable for any child. As a thinking teacher, I would need to be constantly designing good learning opportunities for my students.
