Types of Word Problems

We discussed about the various word problems and Dr Yeap emphaszied the importance of providing a variety of word problems to children. This will create opportunity for children apply their knowledge in accordance to different levels, from simple to abstract. At the same time, he reminded us, teachers should not adopt the 'key word strategy' as this will restrict children's logical thinking ability. They will be confused too when they need to add even they see the word 'less'.

On top of that, I learnt the differences between discreet numbers and continous numbers.

37 monsters- discreet number
$37- continous number

Part-Part Whole Question

Example 1: There are 37 children in a class. 19 are girls. How many are boys?
Example 2: There are 37 students in a class. 19 students are present. How many are absent?

Change Question ( There are always an initial and followed by a change.)

Example 1: Mary has 37 apples. She gave 19 to Peter. How many has she left?

Compare Question

Example 1: Mary has 37 apples. Peter has 19 apples. How much Mary has more than Peter?

Reflection
Personally, I feel that before children are able to attempt these word problems, they must master and be competent in their reading ability. They need to comrehend the text before executing the word problem given. From my observsation, children who can't read and solve the problems not necessary means that they don't understand the concept taught.
